  • Notes: Henry William Poor (1844-1915) was, with his father, the founder of the firm which became Standard & Poor's, the securities rating agency. He married Constance Brandon and raised 5 children in Manhattan and Tuxedo, NY. The family lived in grand opulence until business reverses hit in 1908. These letters were mostly written to Constance by her three eldest children Henry Varnum Poor II (1880-1931), Roger Merrill Poor (1883-1926), and Edith Brandon Poor (1888-1963, later married John Cochrane). Many of the sons' letters were written from Harvard. Other daughters Constance and Pamela are also represented. Six of the letters were written by family matriarch Mary W. (Pierce) Poor (1820-1912), often discussing her son the Wall Street titan: 'I am much worried by what you say of my boy. It is hard to be here enjoying ourselves while he is too absorbed in business to be able to leave the hot and uncaring life of a great city' (10 July 1903).
Standard & Poor's has been in the news quite a bit recently, making this lot timely as well as interesting. For more on this family, see McGovern, Yankee Family, pages 116-121.
