(FIRE ISLAND) Album containing more than 85 photographs, many of Fire Island, including the lighthouse, the Marine Observer's Tower, Havemeyer Place, mustachioed life-saving crews with their equipment, happy children racing at play, the docks, and waves crashing on the beach; also included are views of Troy, New York, including the magnificent crematorium in Oakwood Cemetary, Washington Park, and someinterior and exterior views of the home of Charles Spencer Francis, the owner of the Troy Times; and groups of "Fresh Air Children," otherfavorite vacation spots, and portraits of family and friends. Albumen prints, 1889- 1890. Most are 6x8 inches or the reverse, 10 are 7x4. 75in or smaller. Oblong 4to, leather torn from both covers. E2,500/3, 500 Set up as a whaling community in the late 17th century, Fire Island evolved into a Bohemian retreat in the 1920's during Prohibition, anticipating the cosmopolitan vacation retreat it is today. These early images capture the solitude and rawness of nature that shapes the physical island, as well as document the summer inhabitants who influenced the character and reputation of the island.
