FIRST ANALYTICAL WORK ON ENGRAVED GEMS MARIETTE, PIERRE-JEAN. Traité des Pierres Gravées. Engraved title, dedication by Soubeyran after Bouchardon, 259 engraved plates on 197 sheets by Caylus after Bouchardon, and 4 vignettes. 2 volumes. 4to, contemporary calf with gilt floral spines and burgundy lettering pieces, moderate wear, joints starting; scattered light toning and spotting. Paris, 1750
- Notes: first edition of the earliest analytical work on engraved gems. The first part is a very detailed summary of the knowledge of gems containing a history, modern engravers, stones used, tools, equipment, lapidary processes, and a large important bibliography of works published on engraved gems; Volume 2 is entirely dedicated to the cabinet of Louis XV. C. W. King criticized the engravings by Bouchardon as too vague to provide accuracy. In fact, Mariette considered Bouchardon to be one of the best draughtsmen in Europe and wanted him for this work; the engraver, Comte de Caylus, was Mariette's friend and an influential art critic of the time. Sinkankas 4208; Brunet III, 1429; Cohen-de-Ricci 683.
