Notes: excessively rare first edition. Captured in the Sioux Uprising of 1862, Wakefield, the wife of an Indian agency doctor at Yellow Medicine, was captured while attempting to escape to the safety of Fort Ridgely. Although protected by one of her captors named Chaska from being murdered or raped, he was nevertheless (to her dismay) one of 38 Indians ultimately executed. Wakefield's narrative describes her capture, captivity and release in great detail and is noteworthy for its accuracy, her sympathy towards the Indians and her critique of other captives who changed their stories after being rescued. "I trust... the world will not censure me for speaking kindly of those who saved me from death and dishonor; while my own people were so long -- Oh! so long! -- to come to my rescue," she writes in the preface.
This copy is inscribed on the front wrapper "Mattie from Uncle Williams." Mattie Williams was also taken captive in the Sioux Uprising, later testifying at the military commission trials at Camp Release against a Sioux named Tazoo, who was convicted of murder and rape and executed by hanging.
This captivity narrative not listed in the Streeter Sale, Graff, Ayer or Eberstadt; only the second edition in the Siebert Sale. We could find no copy of the first edition ever coming to auction. OCLC locates only the Yale University copy, the only copy extant according to Howes W22.
