  • Notes: first edition of "the earliest work on this special subject that has come to my knowledge"--C. W. King as quoted in Sinkankas. After Gorlaeus's death in 1609 at Delft, his cabinet was purchased by James I for the Prince of Wales, but was dispersed upon the sale of the Royal Gallery under the Commonwealth. Many of the gems were recognized by later experts among other noteworthy collections including Sinkankas's discoveries of several examples in the Arundel collection. Sinkankas 2470.
