FIRST PUBLICATION OF GOYA PROOFS GOYA, FRANCISCO. Late Caprichos: Fragments from a Series. Commentary and notes by Eleanor Sayre. 12 etchings from the original plates (2 suites of 6) and 32 reproductions. 4to, full gilt-lettered morocco, book and separate folder of plates laid into 1/4 morocco folding box. New York: Philip Hofer, 1971
- Notes: one of only twenty-five numbered copies containing two suites of the plates in their first and only published edition. A few proofs were printed from the original plates which were then passed down through Goya's grandson Mariano to two other owners before Hofer acquired them in the 1930s. After this limited publication of 150, he gifted them to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Sayre's monograph is the definitive study of these prints.
