FITZRALPH, RICHARD, Archbishop of Armagh. Summa in questionibus Armenorum noviter impressa et correcta. Title in red and black with Petit device within composite woodcut historiated border. [6], 177 [i. e., 178] leaves. Folio, 275x201 mm, remboîtage of later limp vellum; contents toned and brittle, lightly dampwrinkled with marginal dampstaining at beginning and end, contemporary inscriptions on title and scattered underscoring and marginalia, wormhole through blank outer margin of approximately the first 30 leaves, paper crack in o1 not affecting text, last leaf reinforced in outer margin on verso. Unidentified Augustinian branded ownership mark on bottom edges. Paris: (Jean Petit & Poncet Le Preux, 1512)

  • Notes: only edition of an examination of alleged Armenian doctrinal errors, the chief dogmatic work by an Irish theologian and prelate (circa 1300-1360) involved in negotiations between the papal court at Avignon and Armenian representatives over the reconciliation of the Roman and Armenian churches. FitzRalph, whose Defensorium curatorum was first published circa 1483, was one of the earliest Irish authors to appear in print. Renouard-Moreau II, 314; Shaaber M119; not in RBH or ABPC.
