(FLORIDA.) Muro y Salazar, Salvador, Marqués de Someruelos. A letter concerning the defense of Pensacola from American attack. Letter Signed as Governor of Cuba to Francisco Venegas as Viceroy of New Spain, 2 pages on one sheet, 12 x 8 1/2 inches; minor wear, repaired wormholes affecting a few letters. Housed in a modern 1/4 calf gilt folding case. Havana, 9 January 1811

  • Notes: In 1810, the Republic of West Florida had thrown off Spanish rule and was then quickly annexed by the United States. This letter was written with the Americans now in control of Baton Rouge and threatening "Movila" (Mobile), leaving the Spanish deeply concerned about their vulnerable capital at Pensacola. Here the Cuban governor informs the viceroy in Mexico that the schooner Proserpina has been unable to reach Pensacola with relief, and asks that another ship be sent.
