(FLORIDA.) Slip bill titled "Bill for the Admission of the States of Iowa and Florida into the Union."

FIRST DRAFT OF THE FLORIDA STATEHOOD ACT (FLORIDA.) Slip bill titled "Bill for the Admission of the States of Iowa and Florida into the Union." 3 pages, 12 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches, on one sheet. Folio, disbound; horizontal crease in lower margin. In 1/4 morocco folding case, minor wear. 28th Congress, 2nd Session, H.R. 497. [Washington], 7 January 1845

  • Notes: This printed draft of the bill for Florida and Iowa statehood was presented to House of Representatives for review on 7 January 1845. It contained a provision that "whenever the federal population residing east of the Suwanee river shall amount to thirty-five thousand, all of said country lying east of said river may be erected into a separate State, to be called East Florida." This clause was stricken from the proposed bill by the House on 13 February, thus preventing the bulk of Florida from being long since split off from the Panhandle.
Another section was also later added to the bill, granting Iowa concurrent jurisdiction over the Mississippi River, and requiring Iowa voters to hold another round of elections in favor of statehood. The final act admitting both Iowa and Florida was passed on 3 March. No other copies of this original slip bill are recorded in WorldCat.
