FLOWN, Lunar Surface, Apollo 15 Cutting Instrument. An approximately 8-inch long stainless steel cutting tool carried to the lunar surface by Jim Irwin. The instrument is a NASA modification to surgical-type scissors with part number (P/N) "SDB42100059-202" and serial number (S/N) "1030 " stamped below one of the blades, and a small blue velcro hook on the opposite side. The LMP personal items all had a color code of blue. With a Typed Letter Signed from Mrs. Irwin providing additional details. NASA/MSC, 1971

  • Notes: This cutting instrument served a variety of functions including opening meal bags and pouches. This was the very tool Irwin used to remove his name tag and emblems from both his flight coverall jacket and the PLSS or "back pack" used during his three lunar surface excursions. The instrument was on the Moon for approximately 67 hours.
