  • Notes:
Floyd Butler Evans was the merchandising manager of the Butler Brothers Wholesale firm in Chicago, but in 1938 he and his wife retired to Pasadena, where Evans planned to study painting. He changed his mind after renting a Pasadena studio from Edward P. McMurtry, a recognized authority on the chlorobromide development process. In 1940 four prints he submitted were accepted to be shown in the annual News and Pictorial Salon sponsored by Kent State University. Encouraged by his acceptance by the salon, and his "discovery" of the artistic possibilities of Death Valley, Evans pursued desert and art photography in earnest, with his work accepted by many international salons. Evans was very active in the Photographic Society of America, first as an associate, and later as a fellow. He was a member of Pasadena's "Pack Rat" club, a group founded in 1930 and well-known in photographic circles for their photo shoots in the desert.
