(FOLK ART.) Handmade metal cart with man sitting on a bale of cot ton, eating a piece of watermelon (another piece sits loose, on top of the bale). 4.5 x 4 x 2 inches. Np (presumably a Southern State), circa 1890s-1905 E800/1,200 Though stereotypical, the quaint quality of craftsmanship and the piece itself make it an appealing example of Southern folk art. The cart is a single, crudely-cast piece of iron, filed to round off rough edges; hand-painted man is of lead, cast from a rather crude, possibly homemade mold; extra piece of watermelon is also of lead; cotton bale is meticulously made of fabric with small iron bands in per-fect simulation of a real bale. From the estate of David "Boss" Martin, a Philadelphia politician of some promi-nence, leader of the 19th Ward and State Senator. Honorary pallbearers at his funeral in 1920 included Governor Sproul, former Governor Baker and the Attorney General. WITH an elaborately calligraphed dedicatory album: "Resolution on the death of Honorable David Martin" on thick stiff paper, illuminated in gold, presented to Martin's family. Large 4to, full soft leather; some light rubbing. Philadelphia, 1920. [SEE ILLUSTRATION OVERLEAF]
