(FOLK ART.) Wooden sculpture of a reclining young African-American male,
with a book under his arm; in hard wood with remnants of original polychrome, 21x7 1/2x8 inches; chip to top of book, some early repair at upper thigh, lower portion of toes worn off, other general mild wear. Probably United States, circa 1867-1880
- Notes: Dressed in shorts, with his book tucked under his arm, the young man is probably a student. Given the style and apparent age of the piece, it was probably carved for a church or a Southern freedman's school. Despite its bumps and scars, this is a strongly evocative piece.
