For Better Travel By B.O.A.C. 1951 39.875 x 25 inches. Condition B+:repaired tears, creases and overpainting in top margin, affecting image; abrasions in image. Born in Whitechapel, London, Abram Games became one of Britain's foremost graphic artists. his career began atage 15, working as a "lettering artist" and preparing showcards for local tradesmen. In 1940, he was posted at the War Office where he designed educational and instructional posters. By the end of WWII, he had not only been appointed "Offical War Poster Designer," he alsohad designed 100 posters for the war effort. Among those was his famous "Join the Ats" poster, which was nicknamed "the blonde bombshell" for the glamourous appearance of the female subject and was later banned from circulation lest it attract the wrong kind of women to service. Games also taught at the Royal College of Art. In this poster, which is quite Dali-like, a gangway on wheels that occupies the center of the image melds scamlessly into a map at the top, which in turn unfurls to show a picture of the world. A very sophisticated Surrealist background adds to the poetry of the image.
