FORSTER, E.M. Group of 11 Autograph Letters Signed.

FORSTER, E.M. Group of 11 Autograph Letters Signed. Mostly one sheet, including 6 aerogrammes, the bulk addressed to either "Mr. Harrison" or "Mr. Gransden." Condition very good, usual folds, some slight occasional yellowing. Cambridge, 1955-1964

  • Notes: The correspondence to the former is addressed care of The New Republic in Washington, D.C. where Harrison worked in an editorial capacity and contains mention of possible contributions by Forster and also a brief discussion of an ongoing censorship trial in London: "At the trial the jury disagreed. At the third trial the prosecution offered no evidence (a customary procedure in this country) and publisher and author were acquitted. I believe there has been no trouble over the book in America. T.E. Lawrence's The Mint comes out next week. There are 'obscenities' in it, but I doubt it being attacked." (February 3, 1955). Among the Gransden letters is a 2-page example discussing Gransden's working manuscript about Forster that includes corrections indicating page numbers and the substance of the errors Forster found (August 4, 1961). Also included is an ALS (June 22, 1970) by the writer Ahmed Ali, best known for his 1940 novel Twilight in Delhi, to Laurance Branden, Esq., regarding the passing of Forster accompanied by a 4-page Typed Letter, unsigned, with his manuscript corrections, entitled "Homeage to E.M. Forster."
