FRANCIS BERNARD (1900-1979). L'HUILE AEROSHELL. 1930. 45¼x30½ inches, 115x77½ cm. Paul-Martial, Paris.

FRANCIS BERNARD (1900-1979)

L'HUILE AEROSHELL. 1930.

45¼x30½ inches, 115x77½ cm. Paul-Martial, Paris.
Condition B: replaced losses and overpainting along repaired tears at edges; sharp creases and abrasions in margins and image; pin holes in corners.

The French modernist poster designers of the Art Deco period, including Cassandre, Carlu and Loupot, did not use photography very often in their designs; they were clearly more at ease with a pencil and an airbrush. The only member of the U.A.M. (Union des Artistes Modernes) who made systematic use of photography was Francis Bernard, one of the pioneers of photomontage in France and the first of the group to work as a full-time art director, for the printer Paul Martial. This photomontage, using only three colors, is an effective piece of advertising and a classic, early photographic poster. The typography and graphics are neatly encompassed within the image.
