Barbarroxa.

Etching, aquatint, burin and roulette, circa 1778. 280x165 mm; 11 1/8x6 5/8 inches, wide margins. Third edition. A superb, well-inked impression of this very scarce, early etching, with strong contrasts and little to no sign of wear.

Based on the oil painting by Velázquez El bufón Barbarroja, circa 1640, now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid. Barbarroja was the nickname of Cristóbal de Castañeda y Pernia, a jester at the court of Philip IV of Spain from 1633 to 1649. Delteil 13; Harris 12.
