Provenance: Tibor de Nagy Gallery, New York, with a label fragment, verso; the Owens Corning corporate art collection; private collection, New Jersey.

Irving Sandler is the celebrated art historian and critic who is best known for his writings on the New York School, The Triumph of American Painting, and his affinity with the artist's perspective - visiting many artist's studios.

This richly colored and sumptuous abstraction by Frank Bowling is the first canvas from his 1970s series of "poured paintings" to come to auction. Beginning in New York in 1973, the artist used a tilting board platform to controlled the flow and descent of the acrylic paint vertically down the canvas. Organized by Dr. Courtney J. Martin, The Tate Museum, Britain recently held an exhibition of these abstract paintings withFrank Bowling's Poured Paintings 1973–8, April 30, 2012 - March 10, 2013.
