FRANK HAYDEN (1934 - 1988) Untitled (Seated Figure).

FRANK HAYDEN (1934 - 1988)
Untitled (Seated Figure).

Carved mahogany, circa 1985. Approximately 330x305x280 mm; 13x12x11 inches. Incised signature, underside of the sculpture.

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; private collection, Chicago.

This elegently stylized, seated mahogany figure is an excellent example of the later work of sculptor Frank Hayden. The Louisiana artist is best known for monumental public sculptures of abstracted figures. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Hayden was considered one of Louisiana's preeminent contemporary sculptors and an influential educator. He worked with many media, including wood, stone, plaster and fiber glass. A similar mahogany figure composition, In Flight, 1985, is in the collection of Lousiana Art and Science Museum.

Hayden studied as an undergraduate at Xavier University in New Orleans, before receiving his MFA from the University of Notre Dame, where he studied with noted Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. Hayden completed postgraduate work at Iowa State University before studying abroad in Munich, Stockholm, and Copenhagen as the recipient of several prestigious scholarships, including a Fulbright Fellowship. In 1961, he joined the faculty of Southern University in Baton Rouge where he taught sculpture and drawing for 27 years. In 1985, the faculty honored him with the university's first Distinguished Professor Award. Hayden died tragically at the young age of 53.

Hayden is currently the subject of a major retrospective Frank Hayden: Lift Every Voice at the Louisiana Art and Science Museum, Baton Rouge, July 1, 2020 - January 1, 2021. Biographical notes courtesy of the Louisiana Art and Science Museum.
