Frank Herbert (1920-1986)

Dune. Fine First Edition.

Philadelphia: Chilton Books, 1965.
Stated first edition, first printing, octavo; bound in publisher's light blue cloth, spine lettered in white, patterned endpapers; in the unclipped first state dust jacket designed by John Schoenherr (minor edge wear to jacket, a couple faint scratches; just bumped at spine ends, small loss to cloth at lower front corner, small stains and scratch to upper edge); 9 x 5 ¾ in.

Originally published in two serial parts by Analog magazine, Frank Herbert's science fiction masterpiece is one of the most well-known works of the modern age. This expertly woven epic touches on issues of environmentalism, colonization, the decline of great empires, as well as the powerful forces of religion and fate. Herbert's world building transports the reader to such a degree that film adaptations have been eagerly undertaken but proven very difficult to execute. Famous examples include avant-garde director Alejandro Jodowsky's psychedelic 1974 version, which was ultimately never completed, and David Lynch's 1984 cult classic. Most recently, Dune skyrocketed into the cultural zeitgeist after the release of French filmmaker Denis Villeneuve's two-part adaptation, the first of which won six Academy Awards in 2021.

Currey, p. 238.
