  • Provenance:
Private Collection, Long Island, New York.

Frank Knox Morton Rehn was born and raised in Philadelphia and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Interestingly, Rehn chose not to study abroad like his contemporaries, though was clearly inspired by the French Impressionists. After visiting the New Jersey shoreline, he became inspired to specialize in marine scenes. In 1881, Rehn moved to New York and became active in the city's artist circles; he became a member of the National Academy of Design in 1908 and was elected president of the Salmagundi Club in 1910. Marshes at Sunset may have been painted during Rehn's summers spent in Magnolia, Massachusetts, alongside John Henry Twachtman, Childe Hassam, and William Merritt Chase.
