- Notes: Franklin (1786-1847) British Arctic explorer, crossed Northern Canada overland 1819-22, descended the Mackenzie River 1825-27, lost in 1847 when his ships became frozen in the ice off of Victoria Island during his third expedition in search of a Northwest Passage. Although undated, the paper to this letter is watermarked 1822 and a date referred to in the letter suggests December 1824 -- just prior to his second expedition.
