Franklin Pierce

Autograph Letter Signed, "FrankPierce," to attorney William Henry Duncan,

sending a promissory note from Charles Haddock (to whom Pierce had loaned $40), requesting that Duncan dun Haddock for the amount and, in a postscript: "The Captains for the two NH Companies are appointed some time since--Please to inform Mr. Worth[?]." 2 pages, 4to, pale blue paper, with integral address leaf; remnants of hinge along upper edge of address page, folds.

Concord, 13 March 1849.

  • Notes: "I enclose herewith a note ag[ain]st Chas. Haddock which I wish you to present for payment. The manner in which I have been treated in relation to this 40$ is very provoking. . . .
". . . Mr Haddock . . . called on me--said his determination to leave was a sudden matter, expressed a great desire to be at home at Thanksgiving, said he was unwilling to leave Town with an unpaid bill behind him and that he had not had time to write to his father for funds--and if I would loan him 40$ . . . . I heard nothing from him for three or four weeks and then wrote him expressing my apprehension that the money which I supposed he must have sent might have been lost or was retained in the hands of the carrier--To that letter I received a decidedly cool reply . . . . Please to present the note for payment. And if it is not honored, return it to me without delay . . . ."
