FRANZ KLINE Untitled.

FRANZ KLINE
Untitled.

Brush and black ink on cream wove paper, 1955. 325x413 mm; 12 5/8x16 1/4 inches. Signed in pencil, lower right recto.

Kline (1910-1962), was born in Pennsylvania and studied at Boston University. He was one of the central figures in the New York Abstract Expressionist movement of the 1950s. Unlike fellow Abstract Expressionists like Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollack and Mark Rothko, who are best known for their color paintings, much of Kline's best work is black and white--either black India ink drawings like this or paintings in black on white prepared canvases. Kline's work in black and white is often compared to Japanese brush and ink calligraphy.

In 1948, de Kooning urged Kline to use an overhead projector he had in his studio to enlarge his drawings and create compositions for large-scale paintings, a technique that had a lasting effect on Kline's work. After considerable success in New York galleries through the 1950s, Kline died young, at the age of 52, from heart disease in New York.
