FRANZ VON STUCK (1863-1928) INTERNATIONALE KUNST-AUSSTELLING / (SECESSION). Circa 1895.
52 3/4x14 1/2 inches, 134x37 cm. Wolf und Sohn, Munich.
Condition A-: minor creases and abrasions in margins and image; staining in image.
In 1893, Von Stück officially co-founded the Münich Secession movement, and used an image of the head of Athena (the Greek Goddess of Wisdom) on a poster advertising the group's first international exhibition. He had first painted the image in 1891, and when he adapted her for use with the Secession movement he found she fit so well that she continued to appear in most of the movement's subsequent advertising - - becoming the de facto emblem of the group. In 1898 Gustav Klimt painted Athena, and she in turn became the emblem for the Vienna Secession as well. Von Stuck reused his image of Athena on many different occasions to advertise Secession exhibitions. We have found examples as late as 1921. These posters exist in many different variations, the common themes being the mosaic background, and the Goddess' head in profile within an octagon. This rare variation also shows a vignette of the exhibition hall and is the largest of all the variations. It is difficult to precisely date as it is not for the " I Internationale Kunst-Ausstellung" which we know took place in 1893. Wember 745 (var), DFP III 3212 (var).
