FREDERIC KIMBALL MIZEN (1888-1965)

FIFTH AVENUE • NEW YORK / THE WORLD'S GREATEST SHOPPING STREET. 1932.

39 1/2x25 1/2 inches, 100 1/4x64 3/4 cm. Latham Litho & Ptg. Co., Long Island City.
Condition B+: repaired tears at edges, some into image and text; minor replaced losses in margins; creases in margins and image. Framed.

Mizen was a prominent illustrator, painter and art teacher who worked for the Sears, Roebuck & Co. Catalog, Coca-Cola and contributed work to the Saturday Evening Post, Collier's and other magazines. During the 1930s, "out West, a coalition of nearly thirty railroads pooled their resources against the auto and introduced the 'Travel By Train' campaign. Their cooperative effort produced nearly a dozen posters portraying a range of national destinations, of which this one of the "most notable" (Zega p. 109). The Empire State Building was constructed in record time, 18 months from start to finish, and opened in May, 1931. It wasn't until 1951 that the now-recognizable antenna was added to the building's spire, bringing its total height to 1472 feet. This poster was printed very shortly after the completion of the famed skyscraper and may well be its earliest appearance in lithograph form. Rare. We could only find one other example at auction. Furness vol 8, 268.
