  • Notes: first edition. fine association copy signed and inscribed by the author to the book's dedicatee publisher p.m. stone. Inscription reads: "To P.M. Stone / With warmest greetings & good / wishes from his friend, / R. Austin Freeman / 19th June 1942." includes two ALsS on freeman's stationery (first letter one sheet, recto and verso, with additional second sheet stapled with typed dedication just as it appears in the book; second letter one sheet, recto and verso, separated at fold) with original mailing envelopes laid-in. The first letter dated 17 January 1942, wherein the author discusses his difficulty in completing the present novel due to his ailing health and wartime conditions. In the second letter, dated 3 February 1942, Freeman makes a heartfelt wish to dedicate the book to Stone, "if you are willing to do me that honour." Excellent wartime survival with a compelling association.
