Title vignette and 300 engraved gems on 150 leaves. 4to, contemporary calf-backed boards, spine ends and edges rubbed with loss; marginal dampstaining to first and last seven leaves, ink crowned ownership stamp on title (unidentified). - Notes: rare collection of the ancient gems in the french royal collection. The plates were originally engraved by Caylus after designs by Edme Bouchardon (1698-1762). This second edition was printed by Basan, who became the owner of the plates and added numbers and captions for his edition; the first was only issued in a few copies by Caylus and bore no place of printing, no date, title, text, nor numbering.
