FROM THE LEWIS COLLECTION HENDRICK GOLTZIUS
The Massacre of the Innocents.
Engraving, circa 1584. 487x375 mm; 19 1/4x14 3/4 inches, small to thread margins. First state (of 3), before the address of Visscher. Ex-collection John Frederick Lewis (Lugt 2761, lower right recto and three times on the verso). Small restored loss lower left corner, scattered light brown spotting. A superb impression of this extremely scarce, unfinished print, with the pentimenti in the blank spaces lower left and in the background printing clearly.
We have found only one other first state impression at auction in the past 20 years. Bartsch 23; Hollstein 17.
