FRY, JOSHUA; and JEFFERSON, PETER. A Map of the Most Inhabited Part of Virginia

FRY, JOSHUA; and JEFFERSON, PETER. A Map of the Most Inhabited Part of Virginia Containing the Whole Province of Maryland with Part of Pensilvania, New Jersey and North Carolina. Large engraved map of the Chesapeake Bay and west on 4 sheets joined. 32x50 inches overall, strong margins; minimally hand-colored in outline; lined on verso with old silk, slight darkening to sheet edges, a few scattered acidity stains, minor spots of marginal fill-in. London: Thomas Jefferys, [1755]

  • Notes: Nice example of the "Dalrymple edition" of one of the most definitive, celebrated, and influential maps of the eighteenth-century British American Colonial period: "The first map of Virginia by Virginians" (Verner). Following the original edition of 1751 the present state is the first printed map to incorporate the appearance of improved detail surrounding the lower Ohio River valley and the region west of the Blue Ridge and Allegheny ranges; other geographic information, settlements, and an early road system are further added in this edition. The map went through several issues over the ensuing two decades, however no subsequent revisions were made to the actual map, only the title and imprint were successively altered. The 1775 version is most often encountered on the market, having a broader circulation as part of Thomas Jefferys'' American Atlas; separately issued states such as this are seen on the market with far less frequency. Cumming, Southeast in Early Maps 281; Stevens & Tree 87(d).
