Florence, 1913-14

  • Notes: Early issues of the organ of the early Futurist movement begun by Giovanni Papini and Ardengo Soffici who broke away from the policies of the then current Italian Socialist publication La Voce, begun by Giuseppe Prezzolini. Lacerba, which consisted mainly of Florentine and Milanese Futurists, began as a fortnightly publication but switched to a weekly political journal with the onset of World War I. It was the principle outlet for the manifestos, political and combative articles, freeword poems, and dynamic typography and reproductions of the members' latest artwork. Lacerba achieved its goal with Italy's declaration to enter the war in May 1915 and many of its contributors went to the Front. Vol II, No. 6 is noteworthy for its inclusion of Marinetti's Lo splendore geometrico e meccanico nelle parole in libertà, Cavacchioli's Rivoluzione, and 2 full-page plates by Boccioni. Taylor 136; Falqui 37.
