G. DESVALLIASES EXPOSITION COLONIALE.
60x45 1/4 inches. Choppy, Paris.
Condition A-: repaired tears in top margin; minor discoloration in margins.
A rare document on French Catholic missions around the world and how they advertised to raise money. In the center of the allegorical image is Charles Foucauld (1858-1916), the aristocrat-officer turned priest and missionary. He is surrounded by religious imagery and native angels and supplicants, and is wearing on his chest the symbol of Jesus Caritas, which he created, a heart surmounted by the cross. Foucauld settled in Tamanrasset, in the heart of the Sahara and was killed by Seroussi bandits in 1916. In martyrdom his visage served as a model to the many French congregations around the world.
