"From being almost exclusively a Scottish game for more than four hundred years, golf was adopted by the English in the nineteenth century. It has always been a traditional seaside game: the coastal turf and natural sand bunkers made for wonderful golfing country. As the game spread, there was an increasing demand by the growing middle classes for playing facilities. The railway companies saw possibilities of passengers and profit in this. Trains could transport golfers from the grime of the city to the coastal resorts, and although at first a bag of golf clubs and its owner on a railway station platform aroused curiosity, it soon became a familiar sight. The golfing girl was an invention of the Caledonian Railway and was later taken up by the LNER and LMS. Glancing through the holiday guides for the Caledonian one could be misled into thinking that golf was played predominantly by women" (Railway p. 140). rare. We could find no other examples at auction. Railway p. 140, Furness vol. 6, p. 20.
