GALLATIN, ALBERT. Letter Signed, as Secretary of the Treasury, to David Parish, concerning the effect of the 1809 Non-Intercourse Act (which prohibited trade with Britain and France) on the bond of a Spanish ship entering a forbidden port. 1/2 page, folded 4to sheet with integral address leaf; usual folds, remnants of prior mounting along left edge.   • Notes: "In reply to your letter of the 18th instant, I beg leave to observe that in my opinion, if the Spanish vessel having given bond under the 13th Section of the non-intercourse act of the 1st instant, shall proceed to a forbidden port during the continuance of the said act, the bond will become forfeited."
    Gallatin (1761-1849) the fourth Secretary of the Treasury, appointed by Jefferson, served from 1801-14, his influence at that post surpassed only by Alexander Hamilton.
