Gardner, botanist and Director of the Botanical Garden of Ceylon, encouraged by William Hooker, spent five years in Brazil, travelling to Pernambuco via Bahia, then beginning his long journey through Ceara, Piauhi, Goyaz and Minas Geraes and returning to Rio.
