- Notes: scarce letter written by garfield's insane assassin. Guiteau's suit against the newspaper was likely in reaction to a story written about his preaching and history of financial frauds. It was during this time that his insanity became apparent, once threatening his sister with an axe. In 1880, Guiteau began campaigning for Garfield and after his election began writing letters to him requesting an appointment. On 2 July 1881, he shot Garfield twice, was promptly arrested, tried and executed.
