GARFIELD, JAMES A. Autograph Letter Signed, "J.A. Garfield," as Congressman, to an unnamed political supporter ("My Dear Captain"),

GARFIELD, JAMES A. Autograph Letter Signed, "J.A. Garfield," as Congressman, to an unnamed political supporter ("My Dear Captain"), asking him "to remain in the District until the Convention" to represent him in the forthcoming election, informing him that "J.B. Phillips of Orwell is very busy travelling the south and western part of his county against me . . . ," explaining why Phillips is against him, and discussing a case [the DeGolyer Pavement case] which "the enemy are trying to make capital out of . . . ." 2 pages, written on the recto and verso of a single sheet, ruled paper; minor scattered soiling, folds. Little Mountain Lake [Colorado], 20 July 1874

  • Notes: ". . . It might be well for the people he visits to know that he went to Washington twice during the last session, to urge me to give him the Orwell P.O. He said he could do more for me than any other man in the County, and offered to take hold with all his might. I told him I would not give him the office unless the people of Orwell wished him to have it. He didn't want to test their sense of the case & as I would abuse them by putting him over their heads he works against me. Another thing: The enemy are trying to make capital out of the fact that I made an arrangement in a pavement patent case for a brother lawyer & was paid for it. I did it in vacation, when it in no way interfered with my congressional duties. To all they may say in the way of criticism, the best answer is that no member of Congress, Republican & Democrat has criticised me for it. Nobody finds fault except those who are trying to get my place. According to present appearances they will not be able to do any better than Caldwell did when he ran. . . ."
The DeGolyer scandal did not prevent Garfield from being re-elected and ultimately becoming President in 1880.
