GARFIELD, JAMES A. Letter Signed, "J.A. Garfield," with 7-line Autograph Postscript Signed, "J.A.G.," as Congressman,

GARFIELD SACRIFICES SURE ELECTION TO SENATE GARFIELD, JAMES A. Letter Signed, "J.A. Garfield," with 7-line Autograph Postscript Signed, "J.A.G.," as Congressman, to Edwin Wallace Stoughton ("My dear Stoughton"), promising to speak with [John?] Sherman, wondering whether his sacrifice of abandoning his run for a Senate seat would be appreciated, and in the postscript: "Since dictating the above, I have seen Sherman, and talked with him in the subject of your letter--. He is friendly as you know; but said he did not yet know what could be done--. I suggest that you write to him directly--." 1 1/2 pages, 4to, "House of Representatives" stationery, ruled paper, folds, docketing in right margin verso. (JAR) Washington, 13 March 1877

  • Notes: ". . . I felt it was asking a good deal of me to sacrifice my favorable chances, almost a certainty of being elected a Senator, but the request was made in such a way that I did not feel justified in refusing to comply. Whether the country will give me the credit for magnanimity I do not know but I felt that I made a sacrifice.
"My reflections upon political affairs have frequently led me to remember Sidney Smith's definition of gratitude, 'A lively appreciation of benefits expected.'"
The Republican party had enlisted Garfield in the effort to elect Rutherford B. Hayes to the presidency, thereby preventing him from running for the Senate seat he desired.
