(GARVEY, MARCUS.) A Call to the People of Asbury Park to hear The Greatest Living Negro Leader and Orator, Hon. Marcus Garvey at Rosela

(GARVEY, MARCUS.) A Call to the People of Asbury Park to hear The Greatest Living Negro Leader and Orator, Hon. Marcus Garvey at Roseland Hall. . .Nov. 13, 1924. Broadside, 10x6-1/4 inches; toned paper professionally conserved and de-acidified with a repair across the top, the whole backed with japan paper. New York, 1924

  • Notes: a very scarce broadside, inviting people from new jersey to hear the black leader speak. It was no accident that Garvey had come to speak at Asbury Park in November of 1924. Just a few weeks earlier, thousands of Klan members had descended on the nearby community of Hamilton, and this presented an ideal opportunity to show unity and strength. "He will speak on the World Movement of Negroes and the Future of the Race in America. Come and Hear this Leading Statesman of the Negro Race. Come and hear about The Black Cross Navigation Steamship Co., organized to trade with Africa, South and Central America and the West Indies. Big Musical Program. . .Be Early to get Seats." At this time, Garvey was on parole and doing his best to put the issue of the Black Star Line behind him, and retain his support in the black community.
