  • Notes: uncommon stock certificate, signed by garvey and then secretary Emonei Carter. The Black Cross Navigation & Trading Company was an adjunct to the Black Star Line, which was now under the shadow of federal investigation while Garvey himself was in Federal Prison in Atlanta. Carter, the secretary who co-signed this certificate was himself the target of the federal government in regard to his part in the case of the steamship General George W. Goethels (alias the "S.S. Philllis Wheatley"). Six months from the date of this certificate, Carter resigned.
