Gary Simmons is known internationally for his chalkboard and erasure drawings. They evoke the black paintings of Abstract Expressionism and childhood narratives within the contemporary art realms of performance and process art. He received an MFA degree from California Institute of the Arts in 1990. His work has been shown at the California African American Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, The Studio Museum in Harlem and the Dia Art Center, New York.
