Sargeant was born in San Francisco, California. As a young adult, she began classes at the San Francisco Art Association where Emil Carlson, the landscape painter, was the director. Following Carlson, she left there and went to study at the San Francisco Art Student's League. After leaving California for a year, she returned and established a studio on Montgomery Street, the location of the current work.
