"GENL CUSTER HAD A SEVERE FIGHT WITH CHEYENNES" (CUSTER, GEORGE ARMSTRONG.) EVANS, ANDREW W. Autograph Letter Signed, with initials, to an unnamed recipient, giving news of the U. S. victory led by Sheridan and Custer against the Cheyenne, Comanche and other tribes on the Washita River and in the Witchita Mountains. 1 page, oblong 8vo sheet; some separations at folds, minor toning. [Kansas, December 1868]

  • Notes: "Genl Sheridan is at Fort Cobb with a large force (1800 carbines), 7th Cav'y, 10th Cav'y; 6th Inf; 19th Kansas Vols, &c -- and has about 7000 Indians collected, Comanches, Witchitas, all the Kiowas &c; and the Cheyennes & Arrapahoes were coming in. Satauti & other chiefs are held as prisoners. The war is about over. Genl Custer had a severe fight with Cheyennes, on Washita River, Nov. 22d, & whipped them badly. Maj. Elliott & Capt. Hamilton killed. We had a fight with Comanches in Witchita Mts on Christmas Day, and cleaned out a village of sixty lodges."
Although only signed with initials, this is likely written by Colonel Andrew W. Evans who commanded part of the 3rd Cavalry in the conflict and was breveted for gallantry and meritorious service after the attacks. Evans would later join the 7th Cavalry.
