GEORGE A. TICE (1938-2025) Petit's Mobil Station and Watertower, Cherry Hill, N.J. 1974; printed 1978.

GEORGE A. TICE (1938-2025)
Petit's Mobil Station and Watertower, Cherry Hill, N.J. 1974; printed 1978.
Silver print, the image measuring 10½x13 1/8 inches (27x33.3 cm.), the mount 15¾x18¼ inches (40x46.4 cm.), with Tice's block-lettered signature in pencil on mount recto, and his title and negative and print dates in pencil on mount verso.

  • Condition: George Tice's iconic Petit's Mobil Station and Watertower, Cherry Hill, N.J, 1974; printed 1978 is in good to very good condition. A meditative and clear-eyed examination of the American landscape, the print showcases Tice's skill in rendering meticulous detail, strikingly atmospheric contrast, and a lush tonal range.

Under close examination in raking light, the surface of the print evidences several inconsistencies. Most visible and as visible in our online catalogue is the scuffing area in the extreme upper left edge of the print. While apparent under typical viewing condition, this is not overly distracting being confined to the edge. A smaller short diagonal scuff is also noticeable in the middle of the extreme left column of the Watertower. This remains discreet and not immediately apparent. Finally, in strong raking light, it is possible to notice two tiny diagonal impressions on the roof of the Watertower, as well as a few scattered specs of impressions and professional retouching. These remain unobtrusive and not at all visible under typical viewing conditions.

The print has no margins and its edges are clean and neat, except for a couple tiny chips on the upper left edge. This is minor and unobtrusive.

The mount recto is bright and clean, with Tice's block-lettered signature in pencil. The mount verso evidences scattered small areas of paper abrasion. This doesn't impact the print and should be considered minor, with Tice's title and negative and print dates in pencil on mount verso. The mount has been trimmed in a way that the first letter of the title is missing.
