    The artist.
Thence by descent to current owner, New Jersey.

George C. Ault spent much of his formative years in London, where his father owned a printing ink business. He received formal art training in London and likely spent time in the hamlet of Framezelle in Audinghen, France during this period. Upon returning to the United States in 1911, Ault started to paint the New York skyline but would return to paint the French countryside in 1924.

Ault is often grouped with Precisionist painters such as Charles Sheeler and Ralston Crawford because of his unadorned representations of architecture and urban landscapes. However, the ideological aspects of Precisionism are not so apparent in his work. Evident even in this early work on paper, he painted what he saw around him, simplifying detail slightly into flat shapes and planes, and portraying the underlying geometric patterns of structures, in this way developing an individual modernist style that prefigured Ellsworth Kelly and other Minimalist artists of the later 20th century.
