  • Provenance:
    The Peter Weiermair Collection

Peter Weiermair was an influential curator and art historian who played a crucial role in establishing photography as a respected art form and championing contemporary artists on the international stage. After studying art history, German studies, and philosophy in Innsbruck and Vienna, he founded the Forum for Contemporary Art in Innsbruck in 1968 and served as curator at the Tyrolean State Gallery, transforming it into an avant-garde hub. From 1980, he directed the Frankfurter Kunstverein while serving as honorary professor at the Offenbach University of Art and Design, presenting over 200 exhibitions that established the venue as Frankfurt's central hub for contemporary art and featuring or presenting photographers such as John Coplans, Robert Mapplethorpe, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Lewis Baltz, Mário Cravo Neto, John Hilliard, Peter Peryer, Ann Mandelbaum, Glenn Ligon, and Tracey Moffatt. Weiermair later directed the Rupertinum (now Museum of Modern Art) in Salzburg from 1997 and the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Bologna from 2001 to 2007, consistently strengthening photography's position within contemporary art institutions. Weiermair published extensively on art and photography and received the Goethe Plaque from Frankfurt in 1998.
