    Private collection, New York.

Scottish-born George Gibson first worked as a scenery painter in Wolverhampton, England before pursuing his career at Twentieth Century Fox in Hollywood during the early 1930s. While rising in the motion picture industry, Gibson received art instruction from F. Tolles Chamberlain and painted with California artists Phil Dike and Millard Sheets. He specialized in realistic backdrops and pioneered the technique of scenic backing. Gibson's finest work can be seen in movies like The Wizard of Oz (1939) and Forbidden Planet (1956). After his service in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, Gibson became the head of the scenic art department at M.G.M. Studios and joined the California Water Color Society. After his retirement from M.G.M. in 1969, Gibson was able to focus on traveling and painting plein air landscapes, like Near Piru. Piru, California is a small historic town in eastern Ventura County in the Santa Clara River Valley, approximately 50 miles from Los Angeles.
