GEORGE PLATT LYNES (1907-1955) Henri Wessels.

GEORGE PLATT LYNES (1907-1955)
Henri Wessels. Silver print, the image measuring 9x7 inches (22.9x17.8 cm.), with Lynes' 245 East 52 Street stamp and the subject's name, the date, and the notation "Dup" in ink in Glenway Wescott's hand, on verso. 1933

Provenance: Glenway Wescott; to Robert Miller Gallery, New York; to a Private Collection, Switzerland

Henri Wessels was a singer and dancer who performed at the Cotton Club in the 1920s and 30s. He lived in Paris for three years in the early 1930s where he performed with the legendary Mistinguett.

  • Condition: George Platt Lynes' vintage photograph of Henri Wessel is overall in good to very good condition. The tones of the print are rich and varied, with deep black, creamy highlights, and fine detail. The contrast between the figure, rendered in creamy bright tones, and the dark background is striking.

Under close examination in strong raking light, the print evidences a few surface imperfections which are primarily confined to the edges of the image area and not entering the human figure. This includes a small soft crease in the upper right corner and a few superficial scattered chips at the far edges (the print has no margin). There is some silvering along the edges, and a small cluster of chips is evident at the far lower right corner. These little imperfections do not distract our gaze from the beautiful and neat depiction of the sitter.

The verso is overall neat and bright, with the notations in Glenway Westcott's hand, to whom the print originally belonged.
