  • Condition: Rodger's 1954 photograph "Emmanuel, son of the chief drummer of the Bunyaro Tribe, Uganda", is in good to very good condition. The striking portrait is contrasty and rich, with both texture and tonal variety.

Under close examination in raking light, the surface evidences a few inconsistencies, which are primarily located around the image area. Most visible are two soft half-moon marks in the upper left quadrant: in the forehead and in the hair. While apparent, they remain discreet and not distracting under typical viewing condition. It may also be possible to discern some exceedingly faint impression on the lower left quadrant from the handwriting on verso.

Other inconsistencies are located on the corners and edges of the print. The print has no margins, and its corners are rubbed with loss on their tips. There is a soft short diagonal crease on the lower left corner, and two soft diagonal creases on the lower right corner, and the extreme edges evidence some minuscule tiny chips. All these superficial inconsistencies remain unobtrusive, and do not detract from the overall powerful composition.

With Rodger's copyright and credit stamps, the title and date in pencil, and the title, date, and inscription "from Jinx Rodger December 1999," also in pencil in a different hand on verso.
