GEORGE WASHINGTON. "The Political Legacy of the Father of his Country" and other related articles on the death of Washington, in an issue of J. Russell's Gazette. Volume VII, #35. 4 pages, 19 3/4 x 12 inches, on one folding sheet; light toning, stitch holes, minor wear. Boston, 2 January 1800

  • Notes: All four pages are black-bordered in commemoration of Washington's recent death. The first page is largely devoted to Washington's famous 17 September 1796 Farewell Address, here titled "The Political Legacy of the Father of his Country." He offers prescient warnings against sectionalism, foreign entanglements, and the formation of political parties. Also included are public testimonials to Washington by John Adams, the United States Senate, and Alexander Hamilton; and the 21 December "Particular Account of the Late Illness and Death of General Washington" by his physicians Craik and Dick.
